Tell me about your Christmas: KC in Bahia

Our family lives in a warm, tropical place in Brazil and we make our Christmas tree out of different types of woods, which we decorate with bright and pretty ribbons, balls, and ornaments made by the children at school.

Sometimes, we use large tropical plants and decorate them, too. Nowadays you can buy fake pine trees to buy and decorate but we carry on the family tradition.

The whole family gathers together at one of the homes and celebrates starting on the 24th December, the birth of Christ. Most of us attend the “missa do galo” – the mass of the rooster” at midnight on 24th December and then join in the celebrations.

The food for the family celebration is very diversified and plentiful, trying to have something that is special for each person – ham, some chicken, special family favorite foods, special cheeses, breads and cakes. There is a mix of religious and Brazilian music playing, and at some point in the celebrations, the children open their presents. We carried these traditions to our homes in the united States.
