Credit Union News - Cuban Cooperative Delegation Visits the Credit Union

Our Credit Union had the chance on Friday the 8th of April of welcoming a delegation of Cuban Cooperative representatives to visit their offices.

The visit was part of a trip to the Washington DC area organized by the NCBA CLUSA United States-Cuba Cooperative Working Group. The Cuban government has, in the past years, reformed government-owned factories, enterprises and farms into member-owned cooperatives.

As part of the re-establishment of relations with that nation, NCBA has reached out to provide assistance to cooperatives in Cuba via this working group, and several educational trips have been scheduled in both nations.

The delegation’s visit to OAS Staff Federal Credit Union was particularly effective as ours is one of the handful credit unions in the United States that are Spanish-speaking in their daily business. The group received a tour of the offices and had an informal meeting with members of the Board of Directors and management, during which cooperative methods were compared, and they told our Credit Union representatives about life in Cuba nowadays.

It is the hope of the Working Group that American credit unions –which are really financial cooperatives-, will be able to provide key assistance in the development of an infrastructure in Cuba for the creation of credit unions there in the near future.
