Black Friday Survival Guide

Electronics: know the best price

A sure-deal method to know if you have the best price? Check the kings, Amazon or Wal-Mart. If they match that price, you have the best.

Know the policies

If any of he things on your list have the remotest chance of needing to be returned or exchanged later, before you buy them check out the store's policy for returns and exchanges on Black Friday merchandise. Don't get stuck with something you cannot exchange.

Know the quality, too

Be aware that many stores now have low-cost production lines aimed for mass sales on Black Friday, so be very, very aware when buying random things. It's best you stick with specific things that you wanted to buy before you got to the stores.

Shopping in your pajamas? yep

As it turns out many of the large stores -over 70%- that advertise their Black Friday store sales also sell those items briefly at the beginning of Black Friday (midnight, that is) on their online websites. Look online as many of these retailers will let you know already now if they plan on having online Black Fridays. This year Walmart has already announced that it will sell most of its store Black Market items online starting at 00:01 on the 27th.

Getting up early? even better

Ultimately the best deals and the best inventory choices are going to be available when the stores open, so if you know exactly what you want and where it is, going there in person can guarantee your purchase in most situations.

Name brand products

There are two sides to these. On one hand, you should not buy any name brand item on Black Friday that is not at least 35%, especially clothing, cosmetics and perfumes. On the other, many name brand boutiques -as in the actual stores belonging to name brands like YSL, Channel, or Tiffany- will have sales on that day which they simply do not advertise. If you want to buy a specific name brand item, Black Friday might be the day to visit those boutiques.

Checking out

Store cards: I don't advocate the use or owning of store credit cards but I am also a pragmatist that knows that many of you do have them. If you do, find out if the store offers special discounts if paying with the store card and take advantage of that. be sure to pay off the complete balance before of the next billing cycle so you won't have to pay any interest, and it will be win-win.

The receipt

Remember to ask for gift receipts. they used to exist only in the United sates but now stores worldwide are giving them during the holidays. They're a must I your purchase will be a gift.

The boycott

Sadly, there are many stores that are now advertising sales on the very day of Thanksgiving, in the United States. Please, think of the staff who are made to work at those stores just because of corporate greed; DON'T go shopping on Thanksgiving Day, it's the country's dearest holiday.

Conclusion

Black Friday is not for everyone, but it is an experience worth trying at least once in a lifetime. Because the savings are real, if you really know what you want to buy, there is no better time, price-wise, to get it.

But if this is not your cup of tea, I invite you to come back to the blog (or subscribe and enter to win one of two $75 prizes) on Thanksgiving Day -the 26th of November- for my guide to Cyber Monday.
